Abstract
The emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in education marks a significant turning point, making it imperative to evaluate its potential benefits and the challenges involved in training future professionals. This study examines the pedagogical initiatives that have incorporated GenAI technology into engineering programmes at higher education level. The primary objective is to elucidate the integration process, the technology's transformative capabilities, and the main obstacles. A systematic review of the literature reveals that GenAI is characterised by its capacity to customise the learning experience to suit the individual needs of each student. However, its implementation in engineering education has been gradual. This slow progress highlights the urgent need for more effective integration into curricula, fostering the development of best practices in its use and consequently contributing to social progress
