Abstract
The use of AAC Sc@ut has been studied. It has been used in classrooms and in occupational units for adults from two associations: ASPROGRADES from Granada and APROMPSI from Linares, Jaén, both of them in Spain. Two hypothesis have been stated: (1) The use of Sc@ut by handicapped adults and by students with any kind of pathology improves their communication and language development, and consequently their learning, (2) The improvement of communication implies a decrease in disruptive behaviours. 67 people have participated. Two observation questionnaires have been used: Communication Interview and Test of Existent Communication Abilities, and also a Scale of Evaluation of Communicative Rules. The field work carried out includes: formation, identification of communicative behaviours, intervention and evaluation. The intervention has been effective for people with severe problems of communication After the use of Sc@ut, users have reduced the number of disruptive behaviours, because their anxiety level has decreased due to their having a support to communicate and to organize their time. Besides, the interaction with their partners, teachers and families has improved. In some special cases, and thanks to the sound reinforcement, oral language and sentence structuring have also improved. Families and professionals that have used the system, specially those who work in occupational units with adults, have accepted it but demand more formation in AAC. Besides they have requested more time for intervention, so the experience is going to continue.
